 An important feature of a gearbox is the anti-reversal latch . The anti-reversal latch is a component that stops gears from spinning in the opposite direction after it is shot. When the anti-reversal latch  is engaged, it interacts with the bevel gear, which contains several direction teeth that serve as built-in stops. But, if gear direction is changed for whatever reason, the discharged latch will prevent the gear from spinning in the opposite direction.
